Shakib Al Hasan Defends Decision to Appeal for Angelo Mathews Timed Out Dismissal
Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan defended his decision to appeal for Angelo Mathews’ timed out dismissal in the Cricket World Cup match against Sri Lanka on Monday, November 6, 2023.
Mathews was due to bat next after the dismissal of Dinesh Chandimal, but he was delayed by a problem with his helmet strap. The 12th man ran to retrieve a new helmet, but by the time Mathews was ready to bat, more than three minutes had elapsed since Chandimal’s dismissal.
Shakib appealed for Mathews to be timed out, and the umpires agreed. Mathews was given out without facing a ball, and he had to leave the field without any opportunity to bat.

After the match, Mathews said that Shakib’s appeal was “disgraceful” and that he was “shocked” that the Bangladesh captain would appeal for a player to be timed out in such circumstances.
However, Shakib defended his decision to appeal for Mathews to be timed out. He said that he was simply following the rules of the game.

“The rule is clear: a new batter must take his position within two minutes of the previous dismissal,” Shakib said at a press conference. “If the batter fails to do so, the umpire may call ‘timed out’ and the batter is dismissed.
“Angelo was not ready to bat within two minutes of the previous dismissal. I had no choice but to appeal for him to be timed out.”
Shakib also said that he had no intention of disrespecting Mathews or the Sri Lankan team.

“I have a lot of respect for Angelo and the Sri Lankan team,” Shakib said. “I would never do anything that would disrespect them. However, I also have a responsibility to my team and to the game of cricket. I had to follow the rules of the game.”
The timed-out rule is a controversial one, and there is no doubt that Mathews’ dismissal was a harsh one. However, Shakib was simply following the rules, and he should not be criticized for his decision to appeal.
